MEET ANDREW BARNES
Andrew Barnes is the founder and director of Andrew Barnes Consulting, advising organisations on crisis leadership, organisational resilience and strategic security across complex critical national infrastructure, high-risk and highly regulated environments.
He retired from the Metropolitan Police Service in 2023 after more than 30 years’ service, culminating as Detective Head of Intelligence for London policing. During his career he held senior leadership roles spanning serious and organised crime, counter-terrorism capability, public safety, command and control, crisis response and the coordination of major incidents and nationally significant events.
Operating extensively within the most highly classified national security environments, Andrew worked alongside UK Government, intelligence agencies and international partners. He was among a small number of accredited senior officers authorised to lead multi-agency command teams during the most serious terrorist incidents, including marauding terrorist attack scenarios, and was accredited at Multi-Agency Gold Incident Command level. His experience also includes leading and supporting responses to major incidents internationally, including operations conducted in hostile and high-risk environments to protect life and national interests.
Since leaving policing, Andrew works across critical national infrastructure, government, transport and regulated financial sectors, helping organisations strengthen preparedness, leadership and decision-making under pressure. His work includes crisis leadership, command and control, organisational resilience, executive-level exercising, leadership development, strategic security discovery and maturity reviews, and helping organisations improve their resilience to cyber and other technology-enabled threats.
Andrew specialises in helping executives and organisations move from fragmented and reactive approaches towards more coherent, enterprise-level models of governance, threat and risk management, capability and assurance.
He holds a Master of Science degree with Distinction in Leadership and Management from Warwick Business School and is both a member of The Security Institute and a Chartered Security Professional (CSyP), a designation under Royal Charter representing the highest standard of competence and professionalism in the security profession.
